Step into the Hermit Club and join a vibrant group of artists, musicians, actors and patrons of the arts! The Hermit Club is a unique social club that presents arts events, hosts dinners and parties in the pub and creates fellowship!
The Hermit Club is the oldest continually operating club dedicated to the performing arts in the country. The Hermit Club has served as a meeting place for professionals with a passion for the arts since its founding in 1904.
Organized by Cleveland architect Frank B. Meade, it was patterned after The Lambs Club in New York City. The Hermit's first Abbey was originally built on Hickox Place (E. 3rd Street) in the heart of the theatrical district of the day. The current Abbey on Dodge Court, constructed in 1928, reflected the shift of the focal point point of theatre in Cleveland from downtown to Playhouse Square.
Hermit Club talents, staged for the pleasure of members and guests, historically have included a symphony orchestra, a blues/jazz group, a chorus, a drama guild and even a barbershop quartet.
