Entertainment at The Hermit Club has four mainstays that you can participate in or just enjoy:
- Drama. If you liked to act in college or high school, you will enjoy participating in The Hermit Club drama program. Plays are typically performed twice each year, and include not only the classics, but also original material written by Hermits.
- Chorus. For Hermits who like to sing, the Men’s Chorus and Mixed Chorus provide the opportunity to do so. Concerts are held at least four or five times each year, some in conjunction with The Hermit Club Orchestra and others with piano accompaniment.
- Big Band Jazz. Held four to five times each year, Big Band Jazz is one of several opportunities to play your instrument for an appreciative audience. The Big Band Jazz program is 50 years old, and consists of about 20 talented musicians.
- Orchestra. If your music tastes are more on the classical side, with a bit of whimsy thrown in, play your instrument in The Hermit Club Orchestra, which typically performs three or four times each year. A perennial favorite is the Christmas concert, presented in conjunction with the Mixed Chorus, which plays to sold-out crowds of members and their out-of-town relatives and friends for three consecutive days.
In addition to these mainstays, The Hermit Club activities schedule is packed with three or more events each month for your enjoyment. You can dance in costume at the Club’s annual themed Alley Party, or in your gown or tuxedo at the Black Friars’ Ball held in honor of past presidents of the Club, called “Black Friars.”
Other recurring events include:
- Club Nights, held in conjunction with just about every performance at Playhouse Square theatres. The Club’s longstanding relationship with Playhouse Square assures top seating preferences, with dinner at the Club preceding the show;
- Wassail Bowl, the traditional Christmas Eve day chorus and orchestra concert that attracts members and their children;
- Poetry Nights, held twice a year, when members share their favorite poems;
- Hermit Idol, where members mimic American Idol to the best of their ability;
- Gourmet wine dinners featuring cuisines from around the world;
- Impromptu Singalongs, tied to major holidays, including Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Independence Day, with dinners following that pick up the holiday theme;
- Books, Authors and You, a literary series featuring a guest author and guest journalist who share their insights and answer questions from the audience;
- An annual Reverse Raffle fundraiser for the club;
- Ballroom dance instruction;
- Monthly Pub Parties (winter) and Patio Parties (summer) featuring free hors d’oeuvres, entertainment by The Hermit Club Jazz Trio and welcomed guests;
- Ladies’ Night, a stag event for women with spouses and significant others not allowed;
- Smoke, Shave and Shine, a stag event for men, which is pretty much what it says it is; and
- Much more. One of the main attributes of The Hermit Club is the encouragement of new ideas for member entertainment and participation
